Gray, chalky, spidered all over, and dusting your shoes every time you walk across it.
Nobody wakes up on a Saturday morning excited about resurfacing anything. The slab just sits there taking sun, hairlines widening a little each year, until you turn off Highway 68 one evening and your driveway looks like a dry riverbed with a car parked on it.
That's usually when my phone rings. Concrete resurfacing is most of what we do around Salinas, on driveways, patios, walkways and pool decks. Plenty of driveway resurfacing contractors will float an overlay across a slab that's rocking on bad ground underneath. I won't. That bond lets go within a season and you've paid for the job twice.
Below is how a driveway resurfacing really runs, what pushes the price around, when a tear-out is the smarter call, and the questions people ask first. Ring (831) 539-2803 and I will come look at it.

Drive Way Resurfacing
Your driveway is the hardest working slab you own. Tires pivot in the same square foot every day, oil soaks in, and those damp Salinas mornings off the valley keep the surface wet long enough to spall the top layer.
Drive way resurfacing fixes the surface, not the subgrade. We grind or shot blast the old slab to open the pores, chase out the cracks, prime it with a bonding agent, then trowel a polymer overlay over the top and honor the existing control joints. Skip the profiling step and the overlay peels off in sheets, like a bad sunburn by Labor Day.
Most driveways are back to foot traffic the next day and holding cars in about three to five days, depending on heat. Square footage, crack repair and finish choice are what move a driveway resurfacing quote.
Asphalt Resurfacer
Folks call asking for an asphalt resurfacer, and about half the time what's out front isn't asphalt at all. It's a gray slab that's gone dark with oil and tire rubber. Worth knowing the difference, because the two jobs share a name and nothing else.
Real asphalt work means a hot mix lift over a milled, tacked base, laid and rolled while it's still hot. Concrete resurfacing is a cement based overlay bonded to a slab we've ground or shot blasted first. Put a blacktop product over concrete and it'll lift at the edges by the first hot stretch after the fog burns off, usually in sheets.
We run Salinas Concrete Contractors as a concrete outfit, plain and simple. If your driveway resurfacing job turns out to be genuine blacktop, I'll say so rather than sell you the wrong fix.
Driveway Resurfacing
Resurfacing a driveway is the right call when the slab underneath is still sound and only the top has quit on you: pop-outs by the garage door, tire tracks worn pale and dusty, edges crumbling where the mailbox side takes the wheel every day. We grind or shot-blast the whole surface first so the overlay has real tooth to grab, chip out spalled areas until we hit concrete that rings solid under the hammer, then trowel the polymer mix on in passes and finish it broom or knockdown to your taste. That prep is the part some driveway resurfacing contractors skip when they're booking three jobs a day, and a coat bonded to dust will flake off in sheets the first time you turn a truck on it. Size, access for the mixer, how deep the damage runs and how hot the afternoon gets are all things that move the cost.
What the job involves
Day one is prep, and prep is most of the job. We grind or shot blast the old slab back to clean, open concrete, chase out and fill the cracks, then wash the dust off so nothing gets sealed in under the new layer. Skip that step and the overlay lifts in sheets inside a year, peeling like a bad sunburn.
Then the bond coat, then the overlay itself, troweled or sprayed depending on the finish you're after. Two days on site for most drives, one day before you walk on it, three to five before you park on it.
Our Salinas Concrete Contractors crew starts after the fog burns off, because damp mornings off the valley slow the cure and a cold, wet bond is how good resurfacing goes wrong.
What it costs
Straight answer: concrete resurfacing cost moves with square footage, how much prep the old slab needs, and whether you want a plain gray overlay or color and pattern on top. Labor is the bulk of it, roughly $45 an hour, and figure around $2.50 a square foot for the placement side of the work. If a section is too far gone to save and we have to pour instead, ready mix here runs about $100 to $150 a yard delivered. That gap between a driveway resurfacing and a full tear out is exactly why we look before we quote.
Call Salinas Concrete Contractors at (831) 539-2803 and we'll measure your slab and give you a real number for a concrete driveway resurfacing cost, not a guess off a phone photo.
Prep is where cheap bids hide. Skip the grinding and the bond coat, and the overlay lifts in sheets by the second rainy season.
When resurfacing is the wrong fix
Resurfacing is the wrong fix when the slab underneath has already given up. If pieces rock when you step on them, or a crack runs the full width with one side sitting higher than the other, an overlay will telegraph that same crack back through within a season and you'll have paid twice. What you want there is concrete removal and a fresh pour, and hauling out broken concrete by the ton is where most of that money goes, along with access for the truck.
Steps are their own thing. Leaning concrete steps with a crumbling top riser get rebuilt, not skimmed.
And if a slab has settled tight against the house, I want to look at drainage and the concrete foundation before anybody sells you new concrete flatwork over a wet problem. An asphalt resurfacer has the same limit: soft base, cracked top coat.
Why choose us for this
Your slab out front is spidered, stained and a little embarrassing when company parks on it, and what you want from resurfacing is simple: hire somebody once, don't supervise them, don't think about that driveway again for years.
So the useful thing to tell you is what the low bid leaves off the sheet. Grinding a slab back to clean, sound concrete and cutting out the crumbling edges eats hours, and an overlay troweled over a dirty or sealed surface starts letting go in sheets by the second rainy season. That is the difference you're paying for, not a nicer truck.
Grinding also makes a gray slurry. It goes on plastic and leaves with us.
Size, how close the mixer can get, how deep we grind and how much edge patching you need are what move the number on concrete resurfacing. The estimate is free, and you're under no obligation to book it.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between sealing and resurfacing?
Sealing is protection; resurfacing is a whole new wearing surface. A sealer soaks in and buys you a couple of years against our fog and February rain. Concrete resurfacing bonds a quarter to three-eighths inch overlay on top, so the color, the texture and the spalling all get fixed at once. Sealer over a flaking slab just makes it shiny and flaking.
How long am I off my driveway?
Foot traffic the next day, vehicles in three to five days. Cool coastal mornings slow the cure, so I'd rather park you on the street an extra day than watch tires print into fresh work.
How do we get started?
Call me at (831) 539-2803 and we'll walk the slab together, same as any of the Salinas Concrete Contractors work we do.
Contact Salinas Concrete Company now
Contact us now on (831) 539-2803 and you get the concrete company that will actually be doing the pour, not a scheduler two states over. Weekdays, nine to five, and a message left after hours gets called back.
When I come out, the first thing I do is tap the slab with a hammer and listen. A hollow ring means the top layer has let go of what's under it, and no overlay, no bonding coat, no asphalt resurfacer is going to glue that back down. Solid ring, and resurfacing is a fair call. Same walk-around whether it's the drive way out front, a back patio, or resurfacing a concrete pool deck that's gone rough underfoot.
Plenty of resurfacing concrete companies will quote off a phone photo. I would rather stand on the thing.
