Concrete gives you about ninety minutes to have an opinion, and after that it has one of its own. Flatwork is all I do, out of Salinas: driveways, patios, walkways, steps, curbs, retaining walls, and slabs and loading aprons for the shops out along East Market.
Most days we are somewhere between Old Town and North Salinas, and we travel out to Chualar, Gonzales, Castroville, Toro Park, Corral de Tierra and Marina.
I like this work. Pulling the trowel across a fresh slab and watching it come up flat and quiet never gets old.
You know the driveway I mean. Cracked at the garage door, gone the color of an old sidewalk, one corner dropped so the gate catches on the way open. It comes out as one clean sheet with the joints cut on a grid. First thing people do is walk it barefoot.
Smallest job we take is two steps or a pad for a trash enclosure. Largest is a commercial slab torn out and repoured in phases so the business keeps running, broom or stamped finish, sealer, and drainage put where the water actually goes rather than where the plan said.
We are usually not the low number, on purpose. The cheaper sheet skips the dig out of soft material and the base rock rolled in lifts, and the steel ends up lying in the dirt instead of tied and chaired. A few rainy seasons later, that slab is somebody's problem.
Size, truck access, how deep we dig, and the state of the old concrete all move the number. Any Salinas Concrete Company quoting off a photo has not seen the soft spot yet.
